Alan Williams, Chicago Bears defensive coordinator

Fans are probably going to be harder than Alan Williams than I am. The reality that you have to deal with is that Williams was not given the right pieces to make this thing work. The combination of losing Eddie Jackson to injury, with Roquan Smith and Robert Quinn to trade was too much for anyone to overcome with the talent they had.

When you look specifically at how Williams handled the defense, there are reasons to be positive. Williams was known as a zone coordinator who would not blitz often. However, you could see that Williams would blitz against specific quarterbacks who were susceptible. He also blitzed more as a means to suffice the lack of pressure his line brought.

Williams also meshed between man and zone much more. He also tried to move his cornerbacks around, move his lineman around, and play more dime, he tired it all. It is tough to blame Williams for lack of trying, and it is easy to say that he simply did not have the talent to operate. You cannot give him an A for coordinating one of the worst defenses in the NFL, but this is not a situation where he will be fired, either.
