Chicago Bears Mock Draft: Round 5, Pick 135 – Josh Newton, CB, Texas Christian

In this part of the draft, the intention isn’t to draft someone you expect to start on their first day.

Rather, it’s important to look at the athlete and what they have currently, as well as what they could become if developed correctly.

Josh Newton, often overshadowed by Tre’Vius Hodges-Tomlinson— nephew of Hall of Famer Ladanian Tomlinson— is a corner with some good tape.

He might not fly off the screen for some, but what he does is play hard and physically. Given the philosophies the coaching staff has put in place for the Chicago Bears, Josh Newton would fit that well.

In Newton’s one season with TCU, he played in 15 games and was a big piece in their defense being as recognized as it was.

Again, Hodges-Tomlinson wears a lot of that hype, but offensive coordinators had to account for Newton, too.

Josh Newton finished his time at TCU with 35 tackles (26 solo, nine assisted), 2.5 tackles for loss, 3 interceptions (one for a TD), and 12 pass breakups.

With Jaylon Johnson and Kyler Gordon being the primary two corners, adding Josh Newton to the mix could help Kyler Gordon continue to improve, while also taking some of the pressure off Jaylon Johnson to be Superman.

As I’ve mentioned in previous mock drafts, having a good secondary is going to be important for the Chicago Bears moving forward, as the NFC North has an abundance of wide receiver talent— aside from the Bears.

Being able to have a solid, young secondary will be important if the Bears want to be competitive in their division, let alone the NFC as a whole.
