5 Chicago Bears free agents most likely to re-sign
Did Mike Pennel do enough at nose tackle for the Bears?
The Chicago Bears should not just go all-in on the defensive line that they had last season. However, if some of the main contributors to the defensive line came back as depth options, it would be for the better. Mike Pennel is a name like that.
Pennel was the only player on the roster who had real experience as a nose tackle. He was not great, but he held down the role. The reality is that it would be nice to have a backup nose tackle, and Pennel showed that he could handle that role.
In some goal-line scenarios or heavy sets, he can come in, plant his feet and defend the run. If there are bigger names around him, he is the type of depth option the Chicago Bears could use.
Filling out the room is going to be tough enough. They need four or five linemen if you bring back Mike Pennel. Of all the linemen he will cost the least and provide the most value per dollar. It is not a bad idea to offer him a low salary extension.
