4 Chicago Bears who could earn an extension this offseason
The Chicago Bears could look to extend Cole Kmet
Cole Kmet hatred has gone too far. Kmet isn’t an elite tight end, but he is a solid one. When Chase Claypool was added, it actually opened things up for Kmet. Despite not coming away with a touchdown in 2021, Kmet found his way into the end zone seven times this year. He also increased his completion percentage to 72%. If I were Ryan Poles, I’d be giving Kmet an extension before any of the other three players mentioned.
Over the last two seasons, Kmet has averaged 578 yards on 55 receptions. I’d take that from my tight end any season. This shouldn’t stop Ryan Poles from adding another tight end to the group, but Kmet is more than capable of being a TE1 in the league — especially with the help of a player like Claypool that allows Kmet more space to work in the middle of the field.
Cole Kmet is also a very solid blocking tight end. This allows him to remain on the field in all situations. I’d like to see Kmet get a three-year extension. He has good chemistry with Justin Fields and you can tell he really loves playing for this organization. I fully expect him to see a second contract here in Chicago.
