4. Will the Chicago Bears extend Jaylon Johnson?
This is obviously not as pressing as David Montgomery, but this will be the last season that Jaylon Johnson is signed on his rookie deal. So, the Chicago Bears can let him enter the year without a deal, but if he gets to free agency, he is probably gone.
The Chicago Bears would be smart to at least engage in extension talks this offseason if they see him as a part of the future. Losing him would be costly, but obviously overpaying him would be as well.
This will be another tough one because Johnson was hands down the best cornerback they have. At the same time, he is just not going to be in that elite tier. Johnson is usually better when he is playing zone, and he certainly is better when he plays one side of the field.
Johnson does not follow wideouts, he is worse on crossing routes than downfield routes, and he is awful in the slot. In the right scheme, he is a low-end number one cornerback or a high-end number two.
He is a liability if you expect him to be that elite CB who follows guys. So, he is a top cornerback on this roster and would be on plenty of rosters. Still, he cannot reset the market or anything. Ryan Poles has to give a fair offer, but has to watch how much he pays Jaylon Johnson.
