Will the Tampa Bay Buccaneers trade Mike Evans this offseason?

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are in a bit of a flux. They lost Tom Brady to retirement. They fired their offensive coordinator, Byron Leftwich. They are currently $31 million over the salary cap (would have been worse had Brady not retired — -$55 million) The two highest-paid players on the roster are both wide receivers — Chris Godwin and Mike Evans. Godwin just signed a contract to remain with the Bucs last season and trading Evans may prove to be difficult as well since he would only save the team $2 million in cap space this year. That’s not much help.

That said, Ryan Poles should at least call to find out what it might take to get Evans from Tampa Bay. Evans is not getting any younger at almost 30, but he’s one of the best receivers in the NFL. He is one of the most consistent receivers I’ve ever seen. He has not had a single season with less than 1,000 yards. That’s incredible for a guy who has played nine years in the league. He has four years with double-digit touchdowns and two more with eight.

If Ryan Poles wants to give Justin Fields a security blanket, Evans is easily one of the best in the league. He might be one of the most underrated receivers in the game because many have written him off over the last few years or just plain forgotten about him. The money is going to be tough but maybe the Buccaneers get desperate to attempt to get under the cap. Getting draft capital for a soon-to-be 30-year-old when your team still has a top receiver in Godwin could be enticing.
