3 off-the-wall trade targets the Chicago Bears need to turn things around

These are not big names for the most part, but the Chicago Bears should consider trading some lower draft capital for former first-rounders who have struggled. These three names have not likely been mentioned but could help the Bears maintain their current winning record and fight for a playoff spot this season.

Payton Turner, DE - NO

The defensive line has been solid for the Chicago Bears this season, but it could be even better. They are 12th in the NFL with 20 sacks and 11th with 72 pressures on the year. With Montez Sweat banged up, it might be time for the Bears to bring in another pass rusher.

Ryan Poles could look to his predecessor's former team -- the New Orleans Saints. The Saints started out the year hot, but quickly cooled off when Derek Carr went down. Spencer Rattler has not done that team any favors and they now sit at 2-6 on the season. It might be time to start making moves for the future and sending Payton Turner to the Bears would be a good start.

Turner is a former first-round pick out of Houston. He went 28th overall and is in the final year of his rookie contract. During his time in New Orleans, he has never started a game. He is currently seeing 28% of the Saints' defensive snaps. Maybe a fresh start in Chicago could do him some good. He currently has one sack, three pressures, and seven tackles on the season. Turner shouldn't cost more than a conditional sixth-round pick.

Despite not showing up on the stat sheet much since entering the NFL in 2021, Turner has a high motor and will fit in well in Matt Eberflus' system. Coming out of Houston, he was projected as a second or third-round pick. He has good length at 6'5" with 35" long arms. He isn't the fastest guy out there, but he does a nice job setting the edge and maintaining his gap assignments. He'd be another non-splash acquisition who could help the Bears get over some injury issues this season, but he could also find a new home here in Chicago.
