5. San Francisco 49ers
The San Francisco 49ers have been known to trade for a running back. They also have been known to have an injured running back on their roster. Christian McCaffery has not played this year, and while there is a speculative timeline, no one knows for sure if and when he will return. Beyond that, Elijah Mitchell is out for the year.
So, the 49ers have leaned on Jordan Mason, and while it has worked, they are now an injury away from rookie Isaac Guerendo and journeyman Patrick Taylor being all that they have. Not only is Herbert better than those two but he is a great fit for this offense.
The 49ers love to stretch teams wide and use fast running backs to hit the hole for big gains. Herbert profiles very similarly to someone like Raheem Mostert, who is a big play hitter in the same manner. They both fit this scheme so well.
The 49ers are 2-3 and we know that this is a Super Bowl or bust type of year for this roster. Why would they not be the highest bidder for a good fit with a position they need?
