By all accounts, the Chicago Bears were going to be a different team as they took the field to take on the San Francisco 49ers in Week 14.
After firing head coach Matt Eberflus, the Bears rolled into their first game with interim head coach Thomas Brown at the helm. Surely, things would be a little better, right?
Let's just say things didn't exactly go according to plan. The Bears came out flat and totaled just four yards of offense in the first half as they were completely dominated, going into the break down 24-0. As the third quarter opened up, though, quarterback Caleb Williams drove the offense down the field in methodical fashion.
The drive ended with Williams tossing a beautiful touchdown pass to fellow rookie Rome Odunze. It was exactly what the Bears needed after maybe the worst half of football they have ever played, statistically speaking.
First up, let's take a look at the standard view of the touchdown that put the Bears on the board.
In real time, it was impressive. The ball placement couldn't have been any better, but Odunze having the awareness to get his feet in bounds at the last second made this play even more eye-popping.
Now, of course you knew there would be some alternate angles of this score. The Bears' social media account was the first to release this one, and boy, it is a magical view.
The alternate view of Rome Odunze's touchdown reception vs. the 49ers will have fans wanting more
it's plays like these which make fans wonder where this type of connection has been all season long. To this point, there have been plenty of stats and figures put out there showing that Odunze has been getting open all season long.
Much has been made about Odunze's lack of production and, to be fair, a lot of the complaints can be directed away from Williams. The rookie quarterback has had lackluster protection in front of him, seen an offensive coordinator fired and is now operating in his first week after Eberflus was let go.
It's been less than ideal during Williams' first season as a pro, but there is plenty of reason to believe the connection between he and Odunze is going to blossom as time goes on. There's been too much change and not enough consistency from the organization for a pair of rookies to stay on the same page.
It'll come. Don't fear. It'll come.
