Bears' all-time do-over is just as painful now as it was then

If you were to ask Chicago Bears fans the most pain they have felt over the course of their lifetime, chances are, you wouldn't have the necessary time to sit and listen to the countless stories.

But, one of them sticks out above all the rest and certainly counts on the long list of "what ifs" or "do-overs" the Bears wish they could have back: the Rex Grossman pick-six back in Super Bowl XLI.

As CBS Sports' Bryan DeArdo pointed out, this goes down as the Bears' biggest do-over in franchise history. Grossman's interception, which was returned by Kelvin Hayden for a touchdown, wound up being the difference in that game.

Rex Grossman's Super Bowl pick-six could have been easily avoided

For fans who might not remember, the Bears were down to Peyton Manning's Colts by a score of 22-17 with just under 12 minutes to go in the Super Bowl. On a first-and-10 from their own 38-yard-line, Grossman dropped back to pass in the rain and lofted it for Muhsin. Muhammad.

The pass was taken back for a score by Hayden, the Colts' defensive back.

What could the Bears have done in that situation? Well, once again to tip my cap to DeArdo, I agree with his assessment here:

"Instead of throwing to Muhammad (who caught a 22-yard pass on the previous play) in a torrential downpour, the Bears would have been better-served giving the ball in that situation to running back Thomas Jones, who rushed for 112 yards on only 15 carries."

Thomas Jones had himself a strong game on the league's biggest stage. Sure, Muhammad had snagged a 22-yard reception on the previous play. But, that's exactly why the Colts were ready to focus on Muhammad even more the next play -- and they did.

And that was a wrap.

The Bears defense held Manning and the Colts without a score the rest of the way, but the lead was too much for an inept quarterback like Grossman to overcome.

It still hurts to this day.
