Everyone within the Windy City is begging for Chicago Bears general manager Ryan Poles to do something to improve the roster before the upcoming trade deadline.

So far, to start Week 9, the Poles have signed former Green Bay Packers defensive end Jonathan Garvin to the practice squad and activated Austin Booker from the IR. He also brought in seven players for workouts, according to The Chicago Tribune's Brad Biggs.

  • OT Jackson Barton, Utah
  • C Jake Hanson, Oregon
  • G Royce Newman, Ole Miss
  • OT Andrew Stueber, Michigan
  • LB D.J. Johnson, Oregon
  • LB Rashad Weaver, Pitt
  • DE Jeremiah Martin, Washington

What the Bears are showing with these workouts

For one, this is the acknowledgement Bears fans needed to know that there is a problem at defensive end. Montez Sweat leads the position in sacks with three, but doesn't even lead the team in sacks. Dayo Odeyingbo was given $48 million in the offseason to only put up three quarterback hits and one sack in seven games.

The Bears also showed their cards on how they feel about the offensive line. While Theo Benedet has been a nice change of pace from Braxton Jones at left tackle, Benedet got exposed a bit in the 30-16 loss to the Baltimore Ravens in pass protection.

While the Bears are showing they are trying to improve the roster, workouts with free agents won't get the job done. Fans want Poles to actually pick up the phone and see if a trade can be done. There is one roster spot open on the team, and the fan base would rather go with a proven player who has already been playing this season.

The options are out there for Poles to take advantage of bad teams like the Tennessee Titans and Miami Dolphins, who are expected to be big sellers at the trade deadline. Why not grab an edge rusher and an offensive tackle with the picks the team has to get this team over the hump of being a postseason team?
