Another day, another stellar performance by the Chicago Bears' defense at training camp.
All the focus has been on the struggles on the offensive side of the ball, but not enough credit is being given to how the defense has played. From their tight coverage to creating turnovers, Bears defensive coordinator Dennis Allen has this unit rolling.
ESPN Bears beat reporter Courtney Cronin shared her observations on how the defense performed in Tuesday's practice, particularly in dominating the two-minute drill.
"The defense had the edge during Tuesday's two-minute drill when the first-, second- and third-team offenses struggled to move the ball. Down five with 54 seconds remaining from their own 47-yard line, Williams was sacked on third down, and the first-team unit exited the field after a 10-yard completion short of the sticks."
What is helping in making the Bears' defense roar throughout training camp?
Some of the credit has to unfortunately be given to the offense for not performing well. There has been a lot of talk of pre-snap issues, turnovers, and inconsistent play from the quarterback Caleb Williams.
The standout position group of the camp appears to be the secondary. Cornerbacks Tyrique Stevenson, Kyler Gordon, and Terell Smith have received praise for their coverage skills and for not making it easy for the receivers to catch the ball. Gordon has been moving around the field from his normal nickel corner position to safety and on the outside.
Allen has been a big fan of linebacker Tremaine Edmunds, who has also had a strong training camp, as he has excelled in coverage and appears to be fast, going downhill. Bears reporters have been saying that Edmunds looks like the guy who was a Pro Bowler with the Buffalo Bills a few years ago.

This was a unit last year that struggled with giving up big yards, but held strong when offenses were in scoring position. Chicago's defense feels different from 2024 and appears to be on the right track to improvement this upcoming season.
