There is something to be said about rooting for an underdog, and that mentality is exactly what's carried former Chicago Bears second-round pick Anthony Miller throughout his football career.
Now with the Baltimore Ravens, Miller is attempting to keep his pro career alive when it looked dead in the water following the 2021 season. Going into training camp with the Ravens, Miller's not done just yet.
The former Memphis standout came into the league as a player who excelled after the catch and was as shifty as any receiver in his class. His gritty mentality was infectious, but unfortunately for Miller, his career faded rather quickly following a somewhat-promising first handful of years.
Can he hang on in Baltimore?
Anthony Miller has an outside chance at surviving training camp with the Baltimore Ravens
Looking at the state of Baltimore's receiving corps, one name obviously sticks out as DeAndre Hopkins joined Lamar Jackson. But, the Ravens still have two fan favorites in Rashod Bateman and recently-drafted Zay Flowers.
So, that's three.
2024 fourth-round pick Devontez Walker likely isn't going anywhere, so that makes four.
The Ravens also drafted LaJohntay Wester in the sixth round, this year. Will he be good enough to stick on the 53-man roster? Maybe. Otherwise, he could be a practice squad candidate. Let's pretend he makes it as no. 5.
If the Ravens want to keep six receivers, that leaves Miller competing with the likes of Tylan Wallace, Malik Cunningham and Keith Kirkwood.
Wallace seems to have been on the outside, in Baltimore, for a while. It could be time to move on there. That's the big twist Miller has to be hoping for. If the Ravens are ready to move on from Wallace, then Miller could see a spot open up.
Cunningham is a former quarterback and an interesting talent. He's the wild card. Some fans love the idea of his potential, but he's still newer to the position.
Kirkwood is more of a deep threat, but that's about it. He doesn't present anything special.
If Miller's ability to get open and continue to run crisp routes can stand out in camp, he'll have a chance to make it as the no. 6 guy on the depth chart (assuming, again, the Ravens keep six).
It isn't over just yet for the former Memphis Tiger, but he'll have to have a very strong camp in order to keep his career alive.
