In the closing weeks of his rookie season, one where Caleb Williams saw both his head coach and offensive coordinator fired before December, the quarterback was all but pointing directly toward Detroit Lions' offensive coordinator Ben Johnson as the head coach he wanted moving forward.
Fortunately, there wasn't a second catfish attempt on Monday as news broke that Johnson had agreed to become the next head coach of the Bears. During his introductory press conference on Tuesday, Johnson did confirm that not only was Williams part of the reason why he joined the Bears but that he was going to construct an offense that specifically catered to his new quarterback.
Williams was among a group of players that included DJ Moore, Rome Odunze, and Cole Kmet who were in attendance for Johnson's opening remarks. After Johnson took the floor, the media contingent met with Williams where the quarterback shared his exact reaction that he had when he found out who his next coach was going to be.
Caleb Williams couldn't contain his excitement over Ben Johnson being his head coach.
In hiring Johnson, the Bears instantly corrected the mistake they made with Justin Fields and, a lesser extent, Mitch Trubisky. For Fields, while an offensive-minded head coach in Matt Nagy oversaw his rookie season with the Bears, the former head coach had no interest in constructing an offense for the Bears' former first-round pick. In a similar sense, Nagy, after two seasons, was no longer a fan of Trubisky.
In the pairing of Johnson and Williams, the Bears have a head coach and quarterback who are connected at the hip. Williams wants Johnson as his head coach as much as Johnson wants Williams as his quarterback. The fact that is a new reality for a Bears' organization is a sign that things are finally trending in a positive direction.
