Caleb Williams might have been on his way to scoring a go-ahead touchdown with just a few minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. The Chicago Bears had waited the entire afternoon, battled themselves all game with self-inflicted wounds, for a moment like this.
And then as Williams took off running, the unthinkable happened.
The unimaginable.
The incomprehensible.
When Williams hit the ground at Soldier Field, the entire crowd went from a raucous, hopeful bunch to thousands of people suddenly hit with something that couldn't be described any other way than a knockout punch to the gut.
It was a dark moment for Bears fans, and Jeff Wierus of FOX Chicago happened to capture what it looked and sounded like from a unique point of view. You can watch the video, here, if you want to re-live the pain.
Caleb Williams' injury moment feels a lot like another infamous Chicago sports moment
Some Bears fans have already gone on to share this sentiment, but if you are old enough to remember just 14 years ago when Chicago Bulls guard Derrick Rose was on top of the basketball world, something God-awful happened then, too.
In that all-too-painful moment to remember, Rose and the Bulls were about to wrap up a Game 1 win over the Philadelphia 76ers in the 2012 NBA Playoffs.
Rose fell to the court in agony and the rest is history.
Now, ignoring the differences between playing point guard in the NBA and quarterback in the NFL, the sheer sickness felt throughout the arena was eerily similar.
We don't yet know the full severity of Williams' injury as I write this, but considering the circumstances, the feelings from this fan base were along the exact same lines as Bulls fans watching Rose hit the ground.
The Bulls were on the rise. They had the youngest MVP in league history.
The Bears are on the rise, They've got a Year 3 quarterback that looks like a guy who can firmly plant himself in the top-5, at his position, for the next decade.
Bears fans are thinking Super Bowl -- maybe multiple.
Williams has become an icon -- not just a Chicago icon, but a sports icon, nationwide.
The 2026 season was a launchpad into Williams' superstardom.
A superstar quarterback in Chicago.
Just think about it.
Bears fans never could have dreamed of a day they'd be able to say their franchise had a superstar under center, until it became a reality over the past several months.
And now, that feeling has to be placed on pause while being replaced with anxiety of the unknown. Whether it's a season-ending injury or not, Williams is going to miss time during what was the most anticipated Bears season in recent memory.
In other words, food has lost its taste, colors seem dull and life has no meaning anymore.

OK ... that might've been a bit extreme, although probably true for the first few hours after the injury Sunday.
