The fun thing about this latest free agent prediction is that it presents something of a moral dilemma. There are so many of the same bland predictions from different NFL Insiders – all of who definitely know for sure what's going to happen – floating around the internet, so every once in a while it's nice to get one that's a little out there.
RELATED: Bears reportedly favorites to land one of NFL's premier free agents this offseason
Take, for instance, The Washington Post. They recently had Jason La Canfora write up a list of NFL offseason predictions based on what he's hearing, which he doesn't forget to point out more than once. It's pretty run-of-the-mill stuff (he's hearing players could be traded), until for very specific free agent prediction midway through the piece: according to La Canfora, the Bears could bring back Khalil Mack this offseason.
Jason La Canfora thinks a Bears-Khalil Mack reunion is happening this offseason
"This is a weak free agent class," he writes. "Los Angeles Chargers pass rusher Khalil Mack is one of the few headliners, and he is poised to fare quite well in this market despite his advancing age. Crazy as it might sound, don’t rule out a return to Chicago for the soon-to-be 34-year old. The Bears gave up serious draft capital to land him from Oakland in 2018; they later dealt him to the Chargers for far less. But this league can move in mysterious ways. Chicago wants pass rush help, has money to spend and is under pressure to win with quarterback Caleb Williams on his rookie deal."
This puts Bears fans in an especially precarious position. Obviously they go way back with La Canfora, and he does, admittedly, have a tendency to be wrong about things. I'm not going to get into the whole thing, but I wouldn't really blame fans for Bears fans for their skepticism.
But, on the other hand, Khalil Mack. Khalil Mack! It'd be cool. And it wouldn't be the most egregious nostalgia play considering Mack's still plenty productive as an edge rusher – he's only one year removed from a 17-sack season. And it's not like the Bears have a ton of better options on the roster right now anyways.
So, probably take it with a grain of salt. Or absolutely buy in with all your heart. Don't let me tell you what to do. Just maybe start making your peace with having to publicly admit La Canfora was right.
