Bears fans will be miserable if this NFL expert's prediction comes true
By Ryan Heckman
Through eight games, there are some Chicago Bears fans out there who expected far more from this team. And, it's not difficult to see why.
The arrival of Caleb Williams was supposed to change everything, but this soon? Not so fast. Good things take time.
Or, do they?
It is easy for fans to have high expectations and make comparisons, this year, when they've seen other teams in similar positions have the success. One of those teams, doing it this year, happens to be the Washington Commanders.
They're a fellow team with a rookie quarterback who happened to be a top pick, and the Commanders are surging.
Washington has been one of the top storylines of the league, to this point, and came up in a recent ESPN predictions column where several analysts looked toward the end of the season.
Current analyst Mike Tannenbaum contributed to the predictions and chose to give quite a series of bold takes, but not involving the Bears. Instead, he predicted that the Washington Commanders would sweep a trio of awards: Coach of the Year, MVP and Executive of the Year.
"I expect Washington to win the NFC East and make it to the NFC Championship Game, adding plenty of individual hardware along the way," he wrote.
Bears fans would have a difficult time watching Jayden Daniels and the Commanders take home the hardware
Now, this would be phenomenal for Washington and for football, in general. Taking the Bears out of the equation, the rise of Jayden Daniels and the improvement of that Commanders defense is nothing short of impressive. They certainly qualify as the surprise of the season, thus far.
When all the expectations seemed to be that Caleb Williams would be the quarterback to go out and become a rookie phenom, it's been Daniels who has done so, instead.
More Bears news:
That isn't necessarily a slight to Caleb, but more so a slight to the Bears as an organization. By now, fans are used to incompetent and underperforming coaching. They're used to incompetence in the front office.
Has Ryan Poles done some good things? Absolutely. But, he's still left some major holes on both sides of the line, and that lack of talent on the offensive line has significantly impacted Williams in his first season as a pro.
Looking at a team like the Commanders, they seem to be doing exactly what the Houston Texans did with C.J. Stroud and a first-year head coach last year. So, this isn't an impossible task. Teams are turning things around with rookie quarterbacks and new coaching staffs. Except, the Bears continue their trend of a rookie quarterback being paired with the same-old, incompetent coaching staff, just as they've done with previous rookie quarterbacks.
It would be great for the Commanders to see them sweep that trio of awards. Truly, it would be a fantastic story. But, for Bears fans wanting to see the same type of success out of Williams, it would be just one more year of that success coming from a team not in Chicago.
The comparisons have already run rampant in regards to Williams and Daniels, and quite frankly, it's way too early to make a judgement call or even compare the two. The situations are vastly different.
But again, fans are emotional beings, and seeing so much success come from the guy drafted right after Williams? That's a tough pill to swallow.
