Bears feel even more vindicated after Jets owner blasts Justin Fields

Long gone are the debates between Chicago Bears fans about whether Justin Fields or Caleb Williams should be invested in as the quarterback of the future. While Williams is finding his stride and has led the Bears to a 4-2 record in 2025, Fields is on his second team since leaving Chicago.

Fields never had a coach like Ben Johnson, to be fair, but his struggles go far beyond poor play-calling or a less-than-desirable set of weapons around him. He is not entirely devoid of talent, but there is a noticeable difference in Chicago with Williams under center.

This season, Fields is suiting up for the New York Jets, who have an 0-7 record, despite employing a fairly elite defense. He's also been benched in-game on two different occasions already this year, and the team is now planning to start career backup Tyrod Taylor in his place.

Jets owner Woody Johnson bashes former Bears QB Justin Fields

While Fields had his share of struggles in Chicago, he was never quite this bad. The former No. 11 overall pick is really having a hard time in New York, and the Jets' owner, Woody Johnson, unnecessarily piled on at the NFL Owners Meetings on Tuesday.

When Johnson was asked about how he felt first-time Jets coach Aaron Glenn was performing, he essentially took the opportunity to bash Fields. While incredibly harsh, Bears fans can't help but feel even more vindicated that the franchise chose to invest in Williams.

"It’s hard when you have a quarterback with the rating that we’ve got. [Fields] has the ability, but something just is not jiving. If you look at any head coach with a quarterback like that, you’re going to see similar results," Johnson said. "You have to play consistently at that position, ... If we can just complete a pass, it would look good. We gotta complete some passes. You gotta convince them that you can do something. Otherwise, it's hard to have a game that you can win."

These comments are just insanely brutal toward Fields. He definitely hasn't brought his best stuff during the 2025 NFL season, but for an owner to blast a current player, especially a still-young quarterback, is pretty unheard of.

So far this season, Fields has completed just 63.7% of his passes for 845 yards, four touchdowns and zero interceptions. He's also added 257 yards and three touchdowns on the ground while averaging 6.1 yards per rush, and he's lost two fumbles.

His completion percentage is actually higher than it was at any point in Chicago, but he just isn't impacting the game or leading the Jets' offense to much success. The decision to move on from Fields looked like genius at the time, and it continues to age even better as his days in New York are surely numbered.
