The 2024 NFL Draft class for the Chicago Bears was overshadowed by quarterback Caleb Williams being the number one overall pick. One other player from that draft could be the missing ingredient for the defense in 2025.

FOX Sports NFL reporter David Helman shared his breakout star for each NFL team. Helman named defensive lineman Austin Booker as the Bears' candidate to have a breakout year.

"Booker looked how you might expect a fifth-round rookie defensive end to look in 2024. He played just 27% of the Bears’ snaps and didn’t make a consistent impact with just 10 pressures on the season — though it’s worth noting he did convert two of those 10 pressures into sacks. I like his chances in Year 2 because I like the situation he’s in. The Bears signed Dayo Odeyingbo to pair with Montez Sweat, so Booker can settle comfortably into a rotational role. The overall talent of the defensive line is also better, with Grady Jarrett and second-round pick Shemar Turner in the mix to hopefully make life easier on the edge rushers. The Bears paid a big price to trade up for Booker two drafts ago, so they clearly think a lot of his talent. Will they begin to unlock it now?"

How special can Booker be in 2025?

Last year was more of a learning year for Booker after being selected in the fifth-round of the 2024 NFL Draft by Chicago. He only played 27% of the defensive snaps as he racked up 21 tackles, four quarterback hits, three tackles for loss, and 1.5 sacks in 17 games.

Booker is expected to play a more elevated role in 2025 as he is projected to be the backup defensive end behind Sweat and Odeyingbo. His rotational play should help alleviate the pressure off of Sweat and Odeyingbo to be on the field often.

The strength of Booker's game is his pass-rushing ability. He's not at a point where the team can see him as an every down defensive end, but he can get to the quarterback on those third down plays that are passing situations.

Chicago's defensive line is looking like a strength to the unit and Booker will have a chance to prove why. His improved play in 2025 could make or break the roster as they get deep into the regular season and fighting for a postseason spot.
