This situation has just about reached the point of no return.
No, really. Is Kyler Gordon ever going to return to the field? Have we already seen the last of him in a Chicago Bears uniform?
After signing a 3-year extension in the spring of 2025, Gordon would go on to appear in just three games last season and has struggled with injuries much of the time since signing that contract.
The coaching staff sounds more disinterested in Gordon than ever. Just yesterday, head coach Ben Johnson gave the shortest answers yet when asked about the nickel corner.
The next day, defensive coordinator Dennis Allen was asked about Gordon and essentially offered nothing other than the fact that he isn't focused on Gordon right now:
"It's something I can't put a lot of thought into right now. I've got to focus on the guys we have."
It's sounded as though the coaching staff hasn't really thought much about Gordon for quite some time, but here, Allen full-on admits it. And, Johnson's sentiments are right on par with Allen's.
Kyler Gordon returning to the field, for the Bears, would be the surprise of the century
Folks, we might never see Gordon return to the field in a Bears uniform. It has gotten that serious. It's become that bad. This coaching staff has shown absolutely zero faith in Gordon, year to date.
Johnson sounds more and more annoyed each time he's asked about Gordon, and it makes sense. The media members want answers and they've gotten a big, fat nothing-burger to this point. We're just a few weeks away from Week 1 and there has been zero update.
All we've heard is pure, unadulterated annoyance out of Johnson when it comes to Gordon's situation.
It wouldn't be surprising if Allen didn't even have a plan for Gordon at this stage. Allen isn't even thinking about him!
To be frank, there is more of a plan in place for Coby Bryant than there is for Gordon's future with the Bears. Chicago is far more focused on Bryant's injury and rehab than they are with Gordon, right now. Now, that hasn't been specifically stated by anybody, but that's a strong opinion that I'd bet holds some serious truth.
It seems more and more likely that the Bears are done with Gordon after 2026. Now, what happens with him this season? Your guess is as good as mine.
They could keep him on injured reserve and then release him after the season, which would save the team $8.3 million.
If they happened to just cut ties this year, that leaves $17.5 million in dead money. But again, nothing would surprise me at this point. No one has any idea what this team is going to do with Gordon, just as they have no idea if he's ever going to return to the field.
But, the tea leaves are pretty easy to read.
Gordon isn't coming back.
If he did, that might be the biggest shock I can remember in recent Bears seasons. I just don't see it happening.
The annoyance from Johnson has reached a breaking point. This entire situation has reached a breaking point.

And I believe that point leads to Gordon's exit out of Chicago before suiting up for another game.
