The Chicago Bears won't be receiving two additional third-round picks from the Jacksonville Jaguars this offseason.

Among the finalists for the Jaguars' vacant general manager position was Bears assistant general manager Ian Cunningham. After a virtual interview with the Jaguars last week, Cunningham had his final interview with the team this week.

Given Cunninghams's inclusion in the NFL's diversity program, the Jaguars would have sent a third-round pick to the Bears in each of the next two drafts had they hired Ryan Poles' second in command. Instead, the Jaguars went in a different direction.

Multiple reports confirmed on Friday that the Jaguars hired James Gladstone to be their next general manager.

Gladstone was previously with the Los Angeles Rams before being named the Jaguars' general manager.

Chicago Bears News: Ian Cunningham remains with the front office.

Once believed to be the favorite for the opening, Cunningham will now return to the Bears and continue his work with the Bears' front office. This offseason marks the third-consecutive season that Cunningham, despite being a prominent candidate, has been passed over for general manager openings across the NFL.

There is no doubt Cunningham has become a trusted voice in the Bears' front office. In fact, when Ryan Poles wanted to trade up during the 2024 NFL Draft and select Rome Odunze, it was Cunningham who convinced the general manager to stay patient. It is curious, however, that Cunningham continues to be overlooked for general manager openings. Once believed to be an ascending candidate, it would be fair to wonder if the Bears' struggles on the field in recent seasons have had a negative impact on his candidacy.

If nothing else, the Bears now have continuity in the front office in Ben Johnson's first year as the team's head coach. Of course, the expectation remains that Ryan Poles will receive a contract extension at some point this offseason.
