Bears' offensive player named X-factor candidate (and it's not D.J. Moore)

There might be something there.

Even with the new pieces put into place in Chicago in 2024, the Bears still managed to put together the worst statistical offense in the NFL.

Elements that include a rookie quarterback in Caleb Williams, the worst offensive line in the NFL that couldn't block for Williams or the running backs, and inconsistent play from their wide receivers, who the Bears paid big money for. All of that resulted in a disastrous season.

Hope is on the horizon again in Chicago with Ben Johnson taking over as head coach and the new pieces he has added to the offensive line and pass-catching positions. The new pieces and playbook will benefit one player on the offense more than anyone (and it's not Williams).

D'Andre Swift poised for breakout season in 2025

Sports Illustrated's Matt Verderame conducted a comprehensive preview of the Bears before the regular season, categorizing various aspects of the roster. One was who could be the breakout candidate and X-factor in the offense. Running back D'Andre Swift got the honors as he has a much-improved offensive line blocking in front of him.

"The Bears are going to run the ball plenty in Johnson’s system, and Swift is the lead back who needs to make it work. Running behind a better line, he should avoid rushing for less than 4.0 yards per carry, something he did last season for the first time in his career. If Swift can regain his prior form, Chicago’s rushing attack will be far more respectable."

Swift had a disappointing first season in Chicago, averaging only 3.8 yards per carry, a career low for the fifth-year veteran. He finished with 959 rushing yards and six touchdowns in 17 games.

Things should go differently for the Bears' offense in 2025 from the offensive line improving to more young talent at receiver and tight end. Swift should get more touches in Johnson' offense whether that's in the run game or the pass game.

The good part for Swift is that he has played in Johnson's offensive system in the past when they both were with the Detroit Lions, and knows how it works. He was more in a split-backfield situation in 2022, but he can still do some damage under him.

There's pressure on Chicago to show improvement in 2025 and Swift is one of them that is on the hot seat. Another repeat of last year and he could be finding a new home during the offseason.
