The Chicago Bears believe they are Super Bowl contenders, but the biggest question mark around the team comes at edge. They have Montez Sweat as their top pass rusher, but they could use some other options.
With cut-down day slated for Aug. 30, multiple players will be put on the open market, and Chicago would be wise to keep an eye on Dallas Cowboys edge Sam Williams. Kevin Patra of NFL.com released an article and labeled Williams a cut candidate or trade target.
"The addition of Von Miller pushes one of the incumbent edge rushers off the roster. I think James Houston’s pure rush ability keeps him on the club. Between Williams and Marist Liufau, I lean toward Dallas keeping the latter, who is a better special-teams player."
Considering that the Cowboys' edge room is now loaded, Williams may not have a spot on the roster, and Chicago would be wise to keep an eye on him.
Bears may want to keep tabs on Cowboys Sam Williams
Austin Booker, who has lined up across Sweat this summer, is dealing with a groin injury. Dayo Odeyingbo and recently signed Marcus Davenport are other options in the edge room, but the idea of adding Williams shouldn't be something they overlook.
While Williams won't be a clear-cut starter, he could provide them with depth and a player who has some upside. In 49 career games (five starts) in Dallas, he has logged 85 total tackles, 22 TFLs, 20 QB hits, and 9.5 sacks. He's also been able to log at least 22 pressures in three seasons.
Williams was a second-round pick in the 2022 NFL draft. And although he hasn't lived up to that draft status, he's someone who's just 27 years old. The Ole Miss product can give this Bears defense another athletic pass rusher that they could have in rotation.
With all the moves the Cowboys made this offseason, it appears Williams' time there could be running out. If the Bears don't want him to hit waivers and allow other teams to potentially add him, they could send over a seventh-round pick to get him in the building.

This move wouldn't drastically improve the Bears, but it would give them another option at a position where they need help. Over the next couple of days, there will be a bunch of movement around the NFL, and teams will be able to add some depth in key areas. With edge being a focus for Chicago, keeping tabs on Williams would be a wise move for Ryan Poles and the front office.
