The Chicago Bears' offense did what it was supposed to against an awful Cincinnati Bengals' defense in Week 9, scoring 47 points with a near-perfectedly balanced 576 yards of offense in the vision of head coach Ben Johnson's dreams.
But one prominent player was absent from that offensive explosion.
Wide receiver Rome Odunze was targeted just three times against the Bengals, with two of the "he's gotta catch that" plays he seems to have every game, and he did not have a reception. Being shadowed by the Bengals best cornerback, DJ Turner, played a big role in Odunze being such a non-factor in the box score.
Odunze's fantasy managers obviously didn't love the zero he registered against the worst defense in the NFL, and beyond that a section of Bears fans were frustrated by his lack of involvement. After one fan went to Twitter after the game calling for the Bears to trade him if they don't want to throw him the ball, Odunze's father seemed to approve that message.

James Odunze's quote tweet naturally got a lot of attention and, also naturally, he blocked responses to protect himself from the automatic savagery that was set to come his way.
Odunze leads the Bears in targets this season, but it's also fair to say he's garnering a lot of attention from opposing secondaries. Sometimes, the ball just doesn't come your way. Being shadowed by Turner set Odunze's teammates up to take advantage of favorable situations elsewhere against a bad defense, and they did so.
Only being targeted three times also doesn't mean Odunze didn't contribute to success of the Bears' offense last Sunday.
Bears social media team pulls no punches in clear response to Rome Odunze's dad
In the category of "it's nice when things work out", Odunze was mic'd up for the game against the Bengals. So the Bears' social media team took the opportunity to post a video, with a short caption that was a clear response to Odunze's dad.

Throughout the clip, which goes for over two minutes, Odunze is shown mixing it up nicely as a blocker, even losing his helmet once as he drove Bengals' cornerback Cam Taylor-Britt out of bounds. Coaches and teammates are also shown giving him props for his blocking, as his blocks clearly helped pave the way for touchdowns by Olamide Zaccheaus and Brittain Brown.
Beyond the physical evidence that shows up on tape or in social media videos, Pro Football Focus gave Odunze the third-best run blocking grade on the team (85.3) for the game against Cincinnati.

When he could have been frustrated by his lack of targets against the Bengals, Odunze instead epitomized the "no block, no rock" mentality Johnson and Bears wide receivers coach Antwaan Randle El brought with them from Detroit. That's something a team leader does, and Odunze is clearly one even if he doesn't have a "C" on his jersey (yet).
