Bears training camp position preview: uncertainty with offensive tackles

The Chicago Bears have finally started to see the investment in the offensive line pay off.

The top of the depth chart features nothing but Ryan Poles' draft picks as the team starts to come into his mold. What does the current state of the offensive tackle room look like?

Darnell Wright

Darnell Wright is a former top-10 pick, and while he has not quite lived up to that level of hype, he has been a solid contributor during his first two seasons. This is a pivotal year for Wright, as the team will have to decide whether to exercise his fifth-year option or let him enter year four without a new contract. With a new coaching staff coming in, there is a question of what can happen.

Braxton Jones

Braxton Jones is in a tough spot. He is coming off of a serious injury and may not be ready to start the season. The Bears have a new coaching staff and they drafted his potential replacement high enough that he could take the job in Week 1 and never look back. Did Jones go from starting three years to riding the bench in a contract season and how much money does that cost him?

Ozzy Trapilo

As noted, Trapilo has a good chance to enter the season as the starting left tackle. He is moving from right to left and is a rookie, so fans should ease their expectations. He may even take time away from Jones in the middle of the year to reset. That should not worry fans, and any signs of progress should be huge for the rookie.

Kiran Amegadjie

The second-year player from Yale was always a project coming in with such a jump in talent-level. However, the Bears were not pleased with what they saw as a rookie and the drafting of Trapilo shows that they may want to keep him as depth for one more season.

Theo Benedet

Benedet spent the year on the practice squad and is likely going to stick in that role one more year.

Joshua Miles

Miles has been around the NFL since 2018 and spent the end of last season with the Bears. Still, Benedet is younger and presents more, so he will have to just to stay on the practice squad.
