Before the Chicago Bears took the field for another training camp practice, head coach Ben Johnson spent a few minutes with the local media and answered questions about how it's gone thus far.
When he got to a question in regards to wide receiver DJ Moore, Johnson addressed a common topic among fans paying attention.
“He is a run-after-catch, just ‘get me the ball’ type of guy. So whether that’s in the back field, whether that’s screens … there’s a number of things we’re looking to do and explore of, how do we get him the ball … he’s really receptive to it.”
DJ Moore could help address fan concern in the running back room
It's no secret that the Bears' running back room has been a topic of concern this offseason. Is D'Andre Swift capable of leading the charge? Will Roschon Johnson or Kyle Monangai be able to surprise and take over a significant role?
Regardless, Johnson has worked hard at getting as creative as possible (to no one's surprise). Moore has, indeed, been lining up in the back field. As some fans have seen or read on social media, this has now been confirmed by the head coach himself.
Looking at how Johnson operated in Detroit, though, this isn't shocking. He is going to try and confuse defenses left and right, and that includes using his offensive weapons in a variety of ways.
This is almost too obvious when it comes to Moore, too, because he has often been labeled as a running back once he has the ball in his hands. He's one of the toughest receivers to tackle after the catch, and that's what makes him so dangerous.
Leave it to Johnson to give him the ball quickly and follow it up with a smart blocking scheme in front of him. Quick tosses, screens and shovel passes are all on the table and then some. Moore just needs the ball in his hands, and Johnson knows that. He's acknowledged it.
