Ben Johnson didn't shy away from addressing Caleb Williams' scrambling concerns

Should he stay in the pocket more?

The Chicago Bears fan base has come to understand that quarterback Caleb Williams likes to use his legs and scramble out of the pocket if he gets the chance. Sometimes, that's good, and sometimes, it isn't.

In the Bears' Week 7 26-14 win over the New Orleans Saints, Williams found himself running out of the pocket quite a bit, evading the rush. The end results were mixed between two dropped passes by Rome Odunze, but some off-target throws.

Even in the Bears' Week 6 victory over the Washington Commanders, there were times Williams was out of the pocket and showed some inconsistencies in making the right decision. A few times, he ended up taking a sack or just running out of bounds for negative yards.

With someone who has Williams' skill set, it's one of those situations where a team either lives or dies by the sword. For Bears head coach Ben Johnson, he doesn't want to limit his second-year quarterback.

"That's part of what makes him special as a player. You don't want to neuter him. You don't. That's a dangerous road to go down cause he's got this natural ability to feel the pocket."

Williams is still growing as a passer, but the potential is through the roof

One thing that is clear is that Williams is not a finalized product, and that's okay. He's only about a year and a half into his NFL career and has things he can improve on.

The one thing Bears fans have learned this year that they didn't initially know is how fast he is as a runner. Back in Week 1, Williams' first career touchdown run is the perfect example of him showing off his sneaky, blazing speed to score.

His athletic ability can make him dangerous. In today's NFL, quarterbacks need to be able to make throws on the run and use their legs to pick up extra yards. Williams has that ability.

This is a work in progress between Williams and Johnson, but Johnson has his quarterback taking the proper steps to improve.
