OTAs officially began for the Chicago Bears on Wednesday at Halas Hall where the topic of conversation was still centered around the bombshell details shared last week regarding Caleb Williams originally not wanting to be drafted by the Bears.
Among the details that were shared, many of which were direct quotes from Williams and his father, was that quarterback did not want to play for the Bears given the past failures the team has had at the position. While Ben Johnson already had a response during an interview with Colin Cowherd last week, he addressed the topic once more with reporters on Wednesday.
"I love it. I love it. I love the opportunity to come in and change that narrative. That’s where great stories are written," Johnson told the Bears' beat on Wednesday.
The good thing is that the Bears got to a point where Johnson is now in charge of Williams' development. Arguably, it's a point they should have been at prior to taking Williams in the 2024 NFL Draft, but the team made an egregious swing-and-miss in not only bringing Matt Eberflus back, but hiring an offensive coordinator Shane Waldron wasn't a fit for Williams from the day they met.
While Johnson addressing the revelations head-on was a good sign for his ability to lead the locker room, it does seem like a miss by the Bears to not have Williams meet with reporters.
Since the book details were shared by ESPN last week, Williams has yet to make any public comments on the matter. Williams was not among the players who met with reporters on Wednesday. It's possible that changes will be made before the end of the week. An easy win for the Bears would be to have Williams meet with the reporters while not shying away from what he felt, but also expressing optimism for the direction the team is headed in
