Every team makes mistakes on big contracts, and the Chicago Bears, of course, aren't immune. Since they made Kyler Gordon the league's highest-paid slot cornerback in April 2025, he has played five games.
It's also unclear when he'll be back in action, as a calf injury continues to keep him off the practice field.
What is, and has been, clear is where the team is with the situation. Head coach Ben Johnson has taken to saying very little, or sending clear messages to Gordon. When general manager Ryan Poles was last asked, he went all to way to expressing uncertainty Gordon ever plays for the team again.
For his part, Gordon has taken his rehab process outside Halas Hall, as workout videos show a healthy player coming out almost every week. If he's trying to force an exit, Johnson and Poles seem sure to honor the wish in due time.
Maybe that's why so little is being said about the situation. The team is over it, and Gordon wants out. All that's left is to resolve how the parting of ways takes shape.

On Wednesday, as two other Bears who began the season on the PUP list did (Shemar Turner and Noah Sewell), Gordon could have returned to practice if deemed healthy enough to do so. But he did not, as easily as expected. It's unclear if he's even in regular contact with the team right now, let alone in the building.
During his press conference on Wednesday, Johnson was asked if there have been any "encouraging signs" with Gordon from his perspective lately. He continued to have little to say, while also saying it all.
"I’ve got nothing to add there.”
If those six words don't sum up the Gordon situation perfectly, nothing can. The Bears are clearly out of answers, assuming they're even seeking answers anymore. Gordon has drawn his lines in the sand regarding his rehab process, and perhaps in other ways behind the scenes.
A little over a month ago, after the preseason opener, Johnson interrupted the end of a question about Gordon to say, "There's nothing to add right now." He still has nothing to add as Week 3 of the regular season approaches, or maybe he just isn't willing to share publicly.

Regardless, we're down to awaiting news of a divorce between the Bears and Gordon. Any other outcome would be a massive surprise.
