Among the signings the Chicago Bears had during the first three weeks of free agency, one important move for them came at linebacker.
After the team released Tremaine Edmunds to create salary cap space, the Bears used that money to sign Devin Bush to a three-year, $30 million deal. While attending the NFL owners' meetings in Phoenix, Bears head coach Ben Johnson discussed what the team will get from Bush.
"He's one of those guys that will fit in nicely with what we're doing," Johnson said via CHGO. "He's smart. He loves ball. I feel good that he's gonna be a great scheme natural look, looking at a Will Linebacker as well."
Ben Johnson talks about having Devin Bush on the team
Bush is coming off one of the best seasons of his NFL career after hitting his personal best 125 tackles last year with the Cleveland Browns. He added eight pass deflections, seven tackles for loss, four quarterback hits, three interceptions, two sacks, two forced fumbles, two interceptions returned for a touchdown, and one fumble recovery in 17 games.
The Bears need more consistency at the linebacker position, as they haven't gotten it from Edmunds or T.J. Edwards over the last few seasons. D'Marco Jackson showed a ton of promise in Bears defensive coordinator Dennis Allen's scheme last season, which landed him a new contract at the beginning of free agency.
What Bush brings to the table is the guy who has played at a high level for a while, but, at 27, still has plenty of years left to play. It appears that he is at the peak of his NFL career, and the Bears are getting him at the right time.
