The aftershocks are still being felt from the explosive recounting of Caleb Williams' thought process prior to being drafted by the Chicago Bears in 2024.
Prior to Williams being convinced that playing for the Bears was the right move to start his NFL career, the young quarterback and his father were looking for any escape possible. That included a scenario where a trade to the Minnesota Vikings could have been forced.
What can't be stated enough is that every fear Williams had about playing for the Bears came true during the 2024 season. Before even hearing his name called as the No. 1 pick of the draft, Williams had doubts that Shane Waldron was the right coach to continue his development at the NFL level. Waldron was fired during his rookie season. There were doubts about Matt Eberflus, and those proved true in what was one of the most embarrassing moments in the history of the organization.
All that is in the past now. Waldron and Eberflus are no longer members of the Bears' organization, and Ben Johnson, especially with what we know now, was the undeniable right candidate to be the next head coach of the Bears. Johnson's arrival is the first step in the right direction for a Bears' front office that failed miserably last offseason.
Caleb Williams might have something special for Matt Eberflus
With Johnson now as his head coach, Williams may have the ultimate revenge game lined up during the 2025 season. The Bears' Week 3 game against the Dallas Cowboys was already going to be appointment television, considering Eberflus is now the Cowboys' defensive coordinator, but now, Williams will have the opportunity to prove just how terrible his former head coach was.
Williams now has a head coach who is going to be willing to watch film with him. And, if it's not Johnson because of his role as the team's head coach, there should be trust in offensive coordinator Declan Doyle to be an improvement over Waldron. Johnson and Doyle will certainly have Williams ready to face Eberflus' defense in Week 3.
