The Chicago Bears are set to play the Minnesota Vikings on Monday as the Bears will have another look at potential head coach candidate Brian Flores.
Given the success that Flores has had as the Vikings' defensive coordinator, his name has ascended toward the top of the list in terms of head coaching candidates. When it comes to the Bears and their next head coach, Flores' past must be considered.
Flores was previously the head coach of the Miami Dolphins, where he was in charge of the development of quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. Tagovailoa has reached his ceiling under current Dolphins' head coach Mike McDaniel, but prior to McDaniel's arrival, the quarterback's future with the Dolphins was in question.
If you were to ask Tagovailoa, Flores may have been to blame. During an appearance on the Dan Le Batard show with Stugotz this past summer, Tagovailoa did not hold back in revealing how he was treated by Flores.
"I don't care who you are. You could be the President of the United States. (If) you have a terrible person that's telling (you) things that you don't want to hear or probably shouldn't be hearing, you're gonna start to believe that about yourself. That's sort of what ended up happening.," Tagovailoa said.
Brian Flores can probably be crossed off the Bears' HC candidate list.
Caleb Williams may not have a full say in who will be the next head coach of the Bears but his development needs to be at the center of those discussions. If Flores' handling of Tagovailoa is any indication, he is not going to be a serious candidate for the Bears' opening. There is no question that the Bears need a disruptor as their next head coach but not one that may damage the relationship between the organization and Williams.
There's another important reason why Flores likely will not get the approval from the McCaskey family to be the next head coach of the Bears. Flores currently has a race discrimination lawsuit pending against the NFL over his firing by the Dolphins and consequent candidacy for the previous head coach openings of the Houston Texans, New York Giants, and Denver Broncos. It will take a bold owner to bring Flores in as their organization's next head coach and considering how the Bears operate under The McCaskey Family, it won't be them.
