Key to Caleb Williams bouncing back for the Chicago Bears in Week 2
The first start of Caleb Williams’ career with the Chicago Bears did not go as well as he or fans thought and wanted. Williams did not complete 50% of his passes and did not pass for over 100 yards in his debut. That can be concerning, but most rookies struggle out of the gate as they adjust to the NFL. The Bears should have done a better job of recognizing this and making life a little bit easier for the rookie.
The first thing the team needs to do is find a run game. Every quarterback is aided by the idea that their team can run the ball because it forces the defense to change its style, and often, it brings an extra safety into the box, which can open up deep passing.
Could the Chicago Bears make life easier for Caleb Williams?
Caleb Williams had 29 pass attempts, while their running backs had 16 carries. That should be what we see from Williams when he is an experienced veteran, but for now, they should take some pressure off of his shoulders.
They need to get their running backs involved in the passing game. Velus Jones Jr. is the only back who caught a pass. D’Andre Swift was signed mostly for his passing game value and did not catch a pass.
The Bears were 5-6 throwing screen passes against Tennessee, but they gained just 14 yards on those plays, ranking 26th in yards per attempt. Too many attempts were to the outside, or even to Gerald Everett, which was bizarre. The team needs to get a few quick dump-offs to Swift.
It will get Swift into the flow of the game and will get Williams a few easy passes that can create yards.
We all want Caleb Williams to be a hero, but asking a rookie to go out there and sling the ball all over the field is asking a lot. Get him some quick passes and some short stuff that gets his confidence going, and build off of that. We need to see this start against the Houston Texans.
