What a heartbreaking way to lose a game as the Chicago Bears were inches from pulling off a massive road win, but instead fell against the San Francisco 49ers 42-38 in Week 17.
Bears quarterback Caleb Williams had one of the best games of his career after throwing for 330 yards and two touchdowns and rushing for another 18 yards. Williams came so close to getting his seventh fourth-quarter comeback win, but short-hopped his final pass in the end zone to fall just short of victory.
After the game, Williams expressed his frustration with how close the Bears were to winning, only to lose at the end.
"It's frustrating. You don't want to lose a game ever. And then just being in that position and having a shot at the end is all you can ask for in those moments. But we've got to do a better job overall, just execution. We made too many mistakes as a team."
Williams should keep his head up as this loss isn't on him
The Bears' offense finished the game with 440 yards, and a lot of the heavy lifting was done off the arm of Williams. While there were accuracy issues at times, this felt like the best game of the season for Williams, who threw the ball well.
Williams' deep ball touchdowns to Colston Loveland and Luther Burden III were two of the best deep ball throws he's had all season. He made the plays when he needed to, excluding the final pass of the game.
Ultimately, this game falls on the defense after allowing almost 500 yards of offense from the 49ers and rarely stopping them. Outside of the pick-six on the opening play, San Francisco's offense was humming with no signs of slowing down throughout the contest.

This one might sting a bit, but the good news is that the Bears still need just one more win to earn the number two seed in the NFC. As long as Chicago takes care of business against the Detroit Lions in Week 18, they are guaranteed to have at least two playoff games at Soldier Field if they win in the Wild Card.
