Caleb Williams latest comments is not a great reflection of Matt Eberflus
Chicago Bears head coach Matt Eberflus tried to steady the ship on Wednesday while speaking with reporters at Halas Hall on Wednesday but his comments only added to the frustration that fans currently have with the team's coaching staff.
One item that was finally addressed on Wednesday was what Caleb Williams was telling Eberflus while the two stood on the sideline during the Commanders' Hail Mary touchdown pass. Williams seemed to be motioning the Bears' defensive backs to move up in coverage and prevent the 13-yard pass that occurred prior to the Hail Mary.
Williams spoke with reporters on Wednesday and confirmed he was telling someone to move but it wasn't the Bears' defensive backs.
Sunday's loss to the Commanders is already up there with one of the worst coaching moments in Eberflus' tenure with the Bears. Let alone the frustration that Bears fans had with Tyrique Stevenson on Sunday, imagine the frustration that would have ignited had Eberflus been given a personal foul due to being on the field as play was ongoing.
It's yet another sign of Eberflus not being prepared for the moment. It's no wonder why Cole Kmet took aim at the Bears' preparation last week. Sure, most NFL teams have a "get back" coach where the their primary role is ensuring the head coach is not on the field during a play but Eberflus should have been well aware of his positioning during the most important moment of the game.
But Williams' comments also add more frustration to the fact that Eberflus did not call a timeout prior to the Hail Mary. If Eberflus was so locked onto the play that he wasn't aware he was creeping toward being on the field, he should have seen that Stevenson wasn't engaged in the play. This is another telling sign that the Bears' head coach is sinking in his role with the team.
