In the Chicago Bears' Week 5 victory against the Carolina Panthers, rookie quarterback Caleb Williams had his best game yet. His performance reminded everyone why he was selected with the first overall selection in the 2024 NFL Draft.
No one is going to spoil this great game, and when you are a rookie, any big game is a positive sign. However, in the last two weeks the Bears took on the Los Angeles Rams and Panthers. The Rams currently rank 32nd in expected points allowed, the Panthers rank 29th.
To be fair, he opened his career against a Tennessee Titans defense that ranks 5th in that stat, so he did deserve the easier matchups. Still, Williams also struggled against the Houston Texans, who rank 16th, and the Indianapolis Colts, who rank 20th. When you look at just passing EPA, the Texans jump to 11, but the Colts drop 24. Also, the Panthers and Rams are 30th and 31st respectively.
Can the Chicago Bears get consistent good play from Caleb Williams?
The good news for Williams? He gets a Jacksonville Jaguars defense that currently ranks 31st in defensive EPA while ranking 32nd in passing EPA. The good vibes should continue this week. After that, the Bears go on a bye before taking on the 27th-ranked Commanders' defense and the 26th-ranked Cardinal's defense.
Seeing Williams stack good performances would be another big moment, especially with this upcoming game being in London, a different environment. Still, while consistency is key, we eventually will need to see him play well against a better defense.
The good news is that Williams may already have his feet under him, and may be playing his best football when that talented defense steps on the field against him.
