When Caleb Williams hands the ball off and sees a big crease for his running back to exploit, the second-year quarterback gets excited.
“It’s super fun,” Williams said following the Bears' 24-15 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles on the Amazon Prime broadcast. “I don’t know if you all ever kinda see me back there, but when I see a crease, I start getting really excited. I start jumping around like a little kid.”
Bears' investment in offensive line starting to pay off
In the Bears’ win over the Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field on Black Friday, there were plenty of times for Williams to show excitement as the Bears’ offensive line paved open lanes throughout the entire game. The Bears finished the game with 281 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 47 carries.
Kyle Monangai ended with 130 rushing yards and a touchdown, and D’Andre Swift added another 125 yards on the ground with a score. The Bears had two 100+ yard rushers in the same game for the first time since 1985.
Monangai and Swift wouldn’t have reached those marks without the efforts of the Bears’ offensive line and the well-executed blocking schemes designed by head coach Ben Johnson.
According to Pro Football Focus, here are the final run blocking grades for the Bears’ starting offensive line.
- LT Ozzy Trapilo (63.8)
- LG Joe Thuney (71.1)
- C Drew Dalman (70.3)
- RG Jonah Jackson (71.4)
- RT Darnell Wright (73.0)
Those are impressive marks against a talented Eagles defensive front, but the Bears' ability to run the ball has been a consistent aspect of Johnson’s offense since the Week 6 bye. After the win over Philadelphia, the Bears rank No. 1 in rushing with their 1,846 total yards and 153.8 yards per game.
