Caleb Williams' visible frustration on the sideline in the first half became a postgame talking point after the Bears overtook the Packers to advance to the next round of the playoffs.
His frustration wasn't without warrant; any human in his shoes would have reacted similarly. Despite all of the preparation and practice that was poured into the Bears' game, they still fell flat during the first half. Williams addressed the moment directly after the game, explaining where his high level of emotion came from.
“Us just not doing our job, us not focusing on the details. You know those types of things that in these games you can’t have. And so, that was the frustrating part, that’s where my frustration… was coming from.”
A Matter of Execution
Caleb is showing that he understands the mission; he knows that the time for progress has passed. This was a once-in-a-career type of game, and not the time to lose your head. In these moments, execution matters. Attention to detail is an effective tool for a winning team. These traits are only magnified in a playoff environment.
Williams avoided singling out any player and referred to all issues as a team problem. This is an experienced move from a star quarterback who has had microphones in his face for years. Williams is showing leadership in addressing his team's first-half shortcomings.
“Being able to stay calm through it, obviously using frustration, being able to communicate with the guys through the frustration. So that when the moment comes up, we hit, and we show up in those moments so we can go win the game.”
Just because Williams showed his emotions and frustration didn't necessarily mean he wasn't calm. Williams is a leader on this team, and when things aren't going as they should, being passive isn't appropriate. Remaining composed in the face of situational adversity is a must if you wish to win playoff football.
