There wasn't a more impressive player on the Chicago Bears in 2025 than running back D'Andre Swift after a tough offseason with questions about him.
Swift ended up having a career season for the Bears and solidified his spot on the roster. At least for the time being, but might not be for long. Pro Football Focus writer Thomas Valentine names Swift as the top candidate on the Bears to be cut in the offseason.
"D’Andre Swift had the best season of his career in 2025. The former Eagles and Lions running back rushed for a career-high 1,217 yards and 10 touchdowns this past season, earning a career-best 83.0 PFF grade that placed ninth among running backs. Despite that, he could still be a cut candidate.
Swift is set to make $7.5 million in 2026, the final year of his contract, but the Bears could save $7.4 million by moving on from him. Chicago’s offensive line is one of the best in the NFL, and it can drop a cheaper option in behind that bunch. Swift would likely get interest on the open market after a strong campaign."
Should the Bears move on from D'Andre Swift in 2026?
Swift had a great season, and it might seem like a stretch to even consider moving on from him. The Bears have a much different situation with the running backs than many expected going into the 2025 season.
Chicago's 2025 seventh-round pick, Kyle Monangai, complicates the situation as he exploded onto the scene with his 783 yards and five touchdowns. That was clearly not expected, as it was a great surprise, but one that could change the situation in the backfield.
The Bears are about $5 million under the cap going into the offseason and have to make some moves. There are already trade talks happening with DJ Moore, Tremaine Edmunds, Tyson Bagent, and Gervon Dexter. While Swift won't be a part of those talks, he could be out for the same reason as the others: saving the Bears money.

If the Bears can find a backup plan at running back in the draft, moving on from Swift could be a solid move. It's going to be hard to replace a guy who ran for 1,087 yards like Swift did.
