The Chicago Bears' ability to overcome adversity has been their superpower all season long. However, they'll be put to the test like never before in a Divisional Round showdown with the Los Angeles Rams.
Chicago's knack for weathering storms is a testament to the level of buy-in first-year head coach Ben Johnson has gotten from this group. His presence has propelled them to thrive in situations that most squads wouldn't. He's going to have to pull another rabbit out of the hat to take down a high-powered Rams club, especially after receiving some unfortunate news.
Bears standout linebacker T.J. Edwards and rookie left tackle Ozzy Trapilo were both placed on injured reserve, per an official team announcement.
Bears' odds of beating Rams take massive hit with injuries to T.J. Edwards and Ozzy Trapilo
Talk about brutal timing. Not having one of Edwards or Trapilo against the Rams, let alone both, is a crushing blow for the Bears. The transaction marks the end of their campaigns, meaning Chicago will be without two key contributors moving forward.
It took some time for Trapilo to become Bears quarterback Caleb Williams' primary blindside protector, but the results proved to be worth the wait. The 2025 second-round pick proved to be an immediate upgrade from fellow newcomer Theo Benedet and ran away with the job. Alas, a ruptured patellar tendon will sideline him indefinitely.
Trapilo's 70.0 overall Pro Football Focus grade ranks 36th out of 89 qualified tackles. He's been critical to Chicago's aerial attack, posting an even better score in pass-blocking situations (71.5). His absence versus a Rams defense that finished with the third- and fourth-most quarterback hits (117) and pressures (174), respectively, is less than ideal.
Edwards has been in and out of the lineup this season due to hamstring and hand issues, but he remained productive when available. The 29-year-old amassed 67 tackles (two for loss), five pass deflections, 0.5 sacks and an interception that was returned for a touchdown across 10 games. His presence in the middle of the field and all-around skill set will be sorely missed.

In a corresponding move, the Bears activated veteran blocker Braxton Jones from injured reserve. He figures to get the first crack at helping keep Williams upright in Trapilo's stead. They also signed linebacker Nephi Sewell to the practice squad, which is likely an attempt to replace Edwards.
