Bears' first week of free agency grade is better than fans thought it would be

Yeah pretty good.

The Chicago Bears have had an interesting start to free agency, where fans thought they might go all out for a player like Maxx Crosby or Trey Hendrickson.

Instead, the Bears made a lot of smaller, more solid moves like signing safety Coby Bryant and linebacker Devin Bush. Pro Football Focus writer Gordon McGuinness liked what the Bears did in free agency, giving them a B grade, with the best move being signing Bush.

"The Bears immediately replace Tremaine Edmunds, whom they recently released, with Bush, who revived his career in Cleveland to the tune of back-to-back 79.0-plus PFF overall grades. Bush, PFF's ninth-ranked free agent, surrendered just a 69.3 passer rating in coverage this past season, the second-best mark among linebackers. He keeps the Bears' defense in great shape at a reasonable price point."

Other moves that McGuinness liked were also wide receiver Kalif Raymond and offensive tackle Braxton Jones. Raymond can help be a WR3 in the offense while giving Chicago a boost on special teams as a returner. Jones gives them experience at left tackle as he goes in as one of the favorites to fill in for Ozzy Trapilo until he returns from injury.

There are still a lot of questions about key defensive positions, with a second safety needed and, most importantly, the Bears still searching for an elite edge rusher. Those positions will most likely be addressed during the 2026 NFL Draft.

With the Bears having just have $1 million in cap space, the team has some work to do on giving out extensions and restructuring deals to make it easier to make more moves. Otherwise, they will be in big trouble the rest of the offseason.

The roster is in a good spot right now, but if the Bears can add a key piece or two in free agency, this team might be truly ready for a Super Bowl run.
