By now, most Chicago Bears fans have heard the news that starting center Drew Dalman has informed the team he will retire from the game of football at the young age of 27.

While the news sent shockwaves through the Bears' fan base, it's hard to believe general manager Ryan Poles didn't already see it coming, at least before the majority of folks found out. He's already been eyeing replacements, as former Washington Commanders center Tyler Biadasz is visiting Chicago.

In addition, the Bears have reportedly been keeping an eye on Baltimore Ravens impending free agent Tyler Linderbaum, widely viewed as one of the top centers in the league.

But, there is one possible replacement no one seems to be mentioning in that conversation: Carolina Panthers impending free agent Cade Mays.

The Chicago Bears could sign Cade Mays to replace Drew Dalman and be in great shape

Last season, Mays played in 14 games while allowing zero sacks, only three hits, and 11 pressures per Pro Football Focus. He was penalized just twice.

A strong pass blocker and still just 26 years old, Mays is truly a very strong option for the Bears. He has started more games than the previous year in each season he's been in the league, so there has been not only consistent improvement but a consistent uptick in playing time.

The Panthers have a decision to make on Mays. Notable Panthers expert Dean Jones of Cat Crave had this to say when asked about the key Carolina free agent:

"Cade Mays has been the starting center for the best part of two seasons. The Panthers will probably let him test the market, and there are already rumors about interest. Mays is young and ascending, but the Panthers already have a lot committed to their offensive line financially. If they can find better or similar production for cheaper, they'll let him walk."

Sure, Bears fans will want a name like Biadasz or Linderbaum, and understandably so. Those two are the guys everybody is talking about. However, if the Bears were to miss out on those two, Mays is another very strong option, and from the sound of it, the Panthers very well could let him go.

At the moment, Mays' projected market value sits at just over $12 million per season. The Bears may be able to get Biadasz at a similar price, so it would make sense to prioritize the former Commanders.

But, for a young and ascending center to plug in under Ben Johnson, offensive line coach Dan Roushar a,nd along with the other studs up front on the line, signing Mays seems like a very logical backup plan.
