The NFL is a copycat league. As the Chicago Bears watch another Super Bowl after a disappointing season they have to be thinking of what they can learn or takeaway from these teams.
Quarterback solves a lot of issues
Every year Chicago Bears fans blame the coach, the playcalling, the offensive line, the receivers, and whatever they can for the failures of their quarterback. However, in most cases, if the quarterback is good, he is going to be good.
Washington and Houston are two recent examples of franchises that turned around overnight thanks to their quarterback. The Eagles were stuck in no man's land with Carson Wentz when Jalen Hurts took over and they found their way. Patrick Mahomes entered a good situation, but Andy Reid was known for playoff chokes and never being able to win the big game.
Washington and Houston went from jokes to contenders, the Eagles went from a team stuck in the middle to two out of three NFC Championships and the Chiefs went from never being a winner to the most hated winners in sports. A quarterback can change everything, and the Bears have to hope that Caleb Williams can be that.
Offensive coaches are good, but the defensive staffs mean just as much
You are going to hear about how Nick Sirianni and Andy Reid are offensive-minded coaches and that is why Ben Johnson is a great hire. However, both teams also boast long-time respected defensive coordinators who have head coach experience. Vic Fangio and Steve Spagnuolo are two of the more respected defensive minds in the NFL. That is why the Ben Johnson hire is great, but the Dennis Allen hire was just as key.
Tight ends need a role on offense
It is notable that the Chiefs went on their dynasty run with Travis Kelce right after the New England Patriots finished a dynasty run with Rob Gronkowski. The Chiefs beat the Eagles and 49ers in their Super Bowl runs and those teams had George Kittle and Dallas Goedert as key weapons. Even when the Buccaneers beat the Chiefs, Gronkowski was back in the mix.
It maybe a coincidence, but a player who can catch and block having a huge impact on games does make sense. Hopefully, Cole Kmet has another level for his game in the Ben Johnson offense.
