Bears' potential cap casualty could backfire on them if NFC rival signs him

Oh....that wouldn't be ideal.

The Chicago Bears are in the red with cap space and must make multiple moves to get back in the green.

Bears general manager Ryan Poles has some good news as they will have over $85 million of flexibility if they restructure some contracts, but it also means that Poles has options to cut players. One of their potential cap casualties, linebacker Tremaine Edmunds, if made available, might end up landing with the New York Giants.

"LB keeps popping up in this exercise for a reason,"GMenHQ site editor Matt Sidney wrote. "Tremaine Edmunds would give the middle of the defense size, range, and coverage ability the Giants simply don’t have right now. At 6-foot-5 and 250 pounds, he can handle the run on early downs and still run with tight ends up the seam, which fits what a modern defense needs."

Tremaine Edmunds could sign with the Giants if Bears cut him

Edmunds missed four games last year with injury, but still made a significant impact on the team. He finished the season with 112 tackles, nine pass deflections, four interceptions, three tackles for loss, three quarterback hits, one sack, and one fumble recovery in 13 games.

The Bears would save about $15 million if they cut Edmunds. There has been consideration for their other veteran starting linebacker, T.J. Edwards, but that would be more costly for Chicago.

Seeing Edmunds go from Chicago to New York wouldn't be great, but it wouldn't be the end of the world. The Giants would most likely overpay for him, and the Bears would save money in the process. It would just be preferred if Edmunds went to the AFC instead.
