In a shocking development, the Dallas Cowboys have reportedly released Trevon Diggs. It's a steep fall from grace for someone who was widely regarded as one of the NFL's best cornerbacks just a few years ago.
Nevertheless, Diggs is subject to waivers after the Cowboys' surprising move and becomes a free agent if unclaimed. His pedigree and the practically nonexistent inherent financial risk (in football terms) make him an intriguing option for contending clubs. With that in mind, the Chicago Bears profile as a logical suitor
Life is all about connections, and it's no different in the league; knowing people can open doors to new opportunities. Fortunately for Diggs, he's very familiar with a member of the Bears organization, which could earn him a shot at redemption.
Trevon Diggs has under-the-radar connection to Bears hiding in plain sight
Bears defensive backs coach/pass game coordinator Al Harris joined the Cowboys' staff to work with the secondary shortly before Diggs entered the pros in 2020. They spent five seasons in Dallas together and developed a strong rapport before the former took his current job in Chicago.
Could reuniting with a friendly face help Diggs get back on track after injuries derailed a once-promising career? He's gone on the record to express his respect for Harris multiple times. Their established connection should at least make the Bears curious about the power of friendship.
Back in 2022, Diggs credited Harris for "basically teaching [him] everything [he] knows as far as playing corner in the NFL." Then, when ex-Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn left to become the Washington Commanders' head coach, the former lobbied for the latter to be the replacement.
Diggs is a ball hawk in every sense of the word, albeit to a fault at times, tied for the third-most interceptions since 2020 (20). His aggressiveness and playmaking ability align nicely with the Bears, considering their knack for generating turnovers. With a clear sense of respect and admiration for Harris, it wouldn't be shocking to see Chicago enter the mix for him.

You could argue that a Bears defense that ranks first in takeaways doesn't have a pressing need for Diggs' services. They have one of the deeper cornerback rooms in the business, raising valid questions about his fit. Nevertheless, having depth is imperative for a squad with aspirations of making a deep playoff run.
