As soon as the Chicago Bears selected Colston Loveland out of Michigan on Day 1 of the 2025 NFL Draft, the questions and narratives began.

There may be some fans wondering what this pick means for Cole Kmet, and that's a fair question. However, this pick doesn't mean what you might think. In fact, Kmet is perfectly safe. This wasn't a pick to replace Kmet.

No, it's actually the contrary. Loveland was selected so that he and Kmet would be able to compliment one another. In today's NFL, being able to utilize 12 personnel (two tight end sets) is a necessity.

Last season, Ben Johnson's Lions ran 12 personnel the third-most in football at 32.2 percent of the time. That should give you a strong indication of why Loveland was drafted. And, as far as the rookie is concerned, he sees himself and Kmet as a big-time problem together.

When speaking to Bears media after being drafted Thursday night, Loveland addressed his feelings on the Bears' current starting tight end and how he believes the two of them are going to be a threat.

"I think, nowadays, you see how teams are trying to get two well-rounded tight ends that can do a lot and put defenses in a bind. I'm super stoked to get in there and learn from him. He's been doing it for a while and really good at it. I'm excited that he can be a mentor for me," Loveland said.

it is no secret that when a team is able to roll out two talented tight ends on the field, at the same time, that defenses don't know how to operate at times. Now, Loveland gets to bring his Sam Laporta-type skill set to Chicago alongside an already-established Kmet.

"Having two tight ends that can do a lot of things messes with the defense. You know, nickel, base, what are we going to play?" he pointed out.

Above all else, Loveland comes across as a motivated, hungry and excited rookie who can't wait to get out there with Kmet and his other teammates.

"I'm super excited to get out there and get rolling," he finished.
