It hasn't taken long for many Chicago Bears fans to fall in love with their first-round rookie, tight end Colston Loveland.
For those who might not be too familiar with the Michigan product, the Bears got themselves a big, strong and athletic receiver who is excellent both before and after the catch. He's going to be a weapon for Ben Johnson's offense, no doubt.
Speaking of Johnson, Loveland was asked about his new head coach in his initial media time with the Bears. Among other topics, Loveland spoke about his affinity for Johnson and came across more than thrilled to be in Chicago under the former Lions play caller.
"We met at Pro Day and I just love the guy. Before I even met him, just watching Detroit last year, the things that they were doing ... really smart, knows what he's doing, knows football," the rookie said.
Colston Loveland calls himself Ben Johnson's 'number one fan'
The no. 10 overall pick would go on to say what most Bears fans have been thinking for months now. Johnson is a stud.
"Finally being able to talk to him and pick his brain, [I'm] a number one fan of that guy for sure and he's legit. He's a stud. I know he's going to put us in great positions and I'm just super excited for it."
That last little bit shouldn't go overlooked, either, because Loveland mentions being put in great positions. That's something Bears fans haven't seen out of their coaches in quite some time, especially in reference to Matt Eberflus.
As far as Bears fans are concerned, the tense and emotional ties between Johnson and Eberflus, of course, go back to Thanksgiving Day last year. That time when Eberflus didn't understand how to call timeout was a historically-bad moment for the franchise.
For Loveland to mention being put in great positions doesn't go unnoticed. That is, after all, something the fan base has been craving out of a head coach, and Johnson sure looks like he's going to be that guy.
It'll help to have a lethal duo at tight end with Loveland and Cole Kmet, too. The two of them together should be a major problem for opposing defenses, and we haven't even touched on the receiving core.
That's a topic for another day, but the bottom line is, Loveland and Johnson were cut from the same cloth. They're going to help this offense tremendously from Day 1.
