One of the biggest turnarounds in the NFL last year was watching the Chicago Bears' rushing attack go from being one of the worst in 2024 to being ranked third in 2025.
The biggest reason for that was the work that D'Andre Swift and Kyle Monangai did as the new one-two punch in the Windy City. Swift finished with a career best in rushing yards (1,087) and rushing touchdowns (nine). Monangai had 783 yards and five touchdowns in his NFL debut.
Chicago's offensive line deserves a ton of credit as well, but Swift and Monangai were great in the backfield together. Some wonder, though, how they rank among the NFL's best.
Bears' backfield is one of the best in the league
Bleacher Report writer Moe Moton ranked the top 10 running back duos in the NFL. Swift and Monangai ranked second on the list, finishing just behind the Los Angeles Rams' Kyren Williams and Blake Corum.
"As long as Swift avoids short-term injuries that plagued him early in his career, he could continue to see an increase in productivity entering his age-27 campaign."
"As a pass-catcher, Monangai has seen limited action, but he's already exceeded expectations as the No. 233 overall pick from last year's draft."
"He's interchangeable with Swift in rushing duties, matching the lead ball-carrier's efficiency on the ground. If Monangai makes strides as a pass-catcher, this tandem could move into the No. 1 spot next year."
The combination of Swift and Monangai is unlike any in the NFL. Swift's speed and Monangai's power on the ground make them just a dynamic duo that can throw defenses off at any point.
One mystery is how long the Bears can keep these two together, as Swift has been in the conversation to be traded or released by the team to save money this offseason and next. Eventually, it does feel like the Bears will move on from Swift, but they have not found the right replacement for him yet.
At the same time, the Bears are curious to know if Monangai is ready to be an every-down back as well. He has had limited opportunities, but he appears capable of getting it done if he needs to.

Chicago is going to try to keep this train going for as long as possible, as they have the perfect combo between Swift and Monangai in the backfield.
