D.J. Moore reveals what Ryan Poles is looking for in Bears next head coach
By Ryan Heckman
Much has been made about the Chicago Bears and their recent actions within Halas Hall. From yet another crunch time loss which included added time mismanagement, to the aftermath which saw head coach Matt Eberflus get fired, there has been a lot to unpack.
What we do know, right now, is that the Bears are going to be led by interim head coach Thomas Brown for the remaining five games. Brown, who took over for Shane Waldron after his firing, has helped rookie quarterback Caleb Williams improve dramatically and noticeably over the last couple of weeks.
But, Brown is only in his role on a trial basis with an opportunity to earn the full-time job after this season. The Bears know they have to conduct this head coaching search in as serious a manner as ever before.
For the short-term, Brown will be doing everything he can for Williams and players like D.J. Moore, Keenan Allen and company to squeeze the most out of this offense. Speaking of Moore, specifically, the veteran wideout spoke publicly, Monday morning, for the first time since Eberflus' firing.
There were a lot of great, honest snippets from Moore's interview on the "Mully & Haugh Show" on 670 The Score. But, one of the more interesting bites came when he was asked about finding out the news that Eberflus was fired.
More Bears news:
Moore said he got a call from general manager Ryan Poles to inform him of the decision, followed by an assertion of what was to come.
"A leader of men is going to be in here for the next coach," Poles told Moore on the phone.
Ryan Poles' qualifications for a new head coach might shed light on top, emerging candidates
Many fans would love to see the Bears go out and get a bright offensive mind to be their next head coach, with Williams in mind, of course. That may end up being someone like Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, who is reportedly interested in the opening.
But, Poles' words seem to describe a different type. Now, that's not saying Johnson couldn't be a real leader of men. We just don't know much about that side of him.
There are some other candidates, out there, who fit the profile, though. Take Mike Vrabel, for example. He'll likely get another head coaching gig, soon enough, as will his former head coach, Bill Belichick.
Even Johnson's peer, defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, seems more the type that Poles described in his call with Moore.
Can someone like Johnson, Kliff Kingsbury or Klint Kubiak be that "leader of men" which Poles is seeking to find? Or, will the Bears go the defensive-minded route once again like they did with Eberflus?
It's safe to say that, regardless of which direction Poles decides to go, fans can agree that finding a real leader is definitively the top priority above all else.
