When the Chicago Bears drafted Darnell Wright in the 2023 NFL Draft, it was a highly debated pick. The Bears passed on the opportunity to take Jalen Carter but beyond that debate was whether Wright was even the top lineman in that spot.

Peter Skoronski had the hometown appeal and went the pick after Wright. The Pittsburgh Steelers traded up for Broderick Jones. Even Anton Harrison went in the first round. However, of those four, it is clear that Wright was the best pick.

The Bears should be validated with their selection of Darnell Wright in 2023.

Skoronski was not considered for Poles because he viewed him as a guard in the NFL, and the team needed to swing for a home run, which is a franchise tackle. Skoronski has played left guard through the first year and a half of his career. Considering the Titans put rookie JC Latham next to him at left tackle, he is not moving anytime soon. Even at left guard, there have been issues for Skoronski.

Speaking of issues, they have come in bunches for Broderick Jones. The argument for Jones was that he was more raw than Wright, but his potential upside was greater. While that may still be true, the formerGeorgia product has yet to prove it at the NFL level.

Even Harrison has been a bit of a liability for the Jaguars in their descent down the standings this season. Paris Johnson has been solid for the Arizona Cardinals, but he went before the Bears had a chance to pick him.

Of the top offensive linemen, it is clear that Ryan Poles got it right by drafting Wright. We can continue to look back on this, but looking at the Bears defense, and where they stand, and looking at the line and where it stands, most fans should be happy that the team invested in the line over defenisve tackle with that pick as well.
